Chicago Photos - The Berghoff Restaurant was founded in 1898 by Herman Joseph Berghoff. When still open it was the oldest restaurant in Chicago. Before opening the restaurant, the Berghoff family sold beer at the Chicago World's Fair of 1893. Herman Berghoff and Jan Berghoff were the third generation of Berghoffs to own the restaurant. They closed the restaurant February 28, 2006 when they decided to retire. Their daughter Carlyn Berghoff partially reopened the restaurant as a bar and banquet hall named the 17/West at The Berghoff and The Century Room.
