Switching from Canon to Nikon, Again

Hello Nikon, Goodbye Canon (Well, Sort Of)

Yep, it’s that time again. The switch of camera brands. This time I’m moving from Canon to Nikon. Happens every few years. Just picked up a Nikon D800 and a Nikon 28-300mm to get started. Well, maybe “switching” isn’t the right word. Camera equipment makers leapfrog each other every few years. I’ve moved back and forth between Nikon and Canon a few times so I may end up holding onto some of my Canon stuff for the next switch in a few years. I’m not brand loyal. I go with whatever brand that meets my needs and my client’s needs.

One thing is different for me this time. I want to simplify. I’ve been picking up more and more equipment over the years and I’ve realized that for the type of subjects I shoot I don’t really need a lot of it. Do I love my Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II? You bet. Do I really really need it? Probably not. I’ve realized the more equipment I have the more locked down to a brand I become. And I don’t want to be locked down anymore. Things are changing quickly in the camera industry. My Canon S100 compact is collecting dust now that I have an Iphone 5. And I credit the Sony NEX-7 with taking off my blinders to what’s possible with a mirrorless camera. The NEX-7 has changed my shooting and mindset. A lot. I shoot a lot of city  skylines and travel subjects. Lugging around 50+ pounds of pro lenses and other equipment for days gets old. With the NEX-7 I can carry a small bag with a Sony 18-200mm and 35mm f/1.8. And to my surprise the image quality has been on-par with the 5D Mark II. Seriously, it’s that good. I’ve found this Sony two lens combo covers 99% of my shooting. So why do I need even a DSLR? Well, uh, hmmm, good question. For now, I need the D800′s higher resolution. And in the studio people are expecting a “pro” DSLR camera. But I don’t think it will be long before mirrorless cameras become recognized as pro equipment. So for me it’s not really Nikon vs Canon anymore. I need multiple brands. Sony is innovating. It’ll be interesting to see what they have coming next. Maybe a 36MP full frame mirrorless?

So, I have a clean slate. Switching brands gives me an opportunity to start fresh. Maybe you should too. It’s probably less difficult than you think. What’s stopping you? I have no regrets so far.

Here’s one of my first images created with the Nikon D800.

New Buffalo Michigan Photos Updated

New Buffalo Michigan Lighthouse and Beach

I added some new photos to the New Buffalo photo gallery.

New Buffalo is a great place. It’s a short drive from Chicago so it’s great for a day trip or a weekend getaway. It’s a small beach town at the Southwest corner of Michigan with some nice little shops and restaurants. One of my favorite places there was the Stray Dog Restaurant. It caught fire in the summer of 2012 and was torn down. Good news is it’s being rebuilt so hopefully they keep some of the atmosphere that made it great.

One of the more familiar sights is the lighthouse. It sits at the entrance to the beach among the rolling dunes and beach grass. Because the lighthouse is on land instead of a Jetty it makes for some unique pictures.

Cincinnati Glencoe-Auburn Place

Cincinnati Glencoe-Auburn Place Hotel and Row Houses

Glencoe-Auburn Place in Cincinnati is unlike anything I’ve seen before. It’s almost like a different world. And if you weren’t looking for it you’d never know it was there. You’re driving through comfy Cincinnati Mount Auburn suburbia and take a turn down a rather normal looking street. Within a block you think you’ve run into a movie set for an end-of-the-world apocalypse movie. Abandoned boarded up buildings, graffiti, weeds taller than people, and broken windows. The Glencoe-Auburn complex was built in the late 1800′s and consists of row house apartment buildings and the Glencoe-Auburn Hotel. Originally designed for the wealthy, by the mid-1900′s it was mainly inhabited by low income tenants and had fallen into disrepair and was later abandoned. In the early 2000′s it was recognized as a historic district. These are part of my Cincinnati photo gallery.

It’s eerie. Ominous. And great for pictures.

New Newport Beach California Photos

Some new Newport Beach California photos are available to buy as prints at my Photoshelter website and some are available to license as stock photos at my Getty Images portfolio. These images are from early 2010 and include Newport Pier, Balboa Peninsula, Dory Fishing Fleet Market, Balboa Fun Zone, Balboa Island Ferry, Balboa Peninsula, The Wedge, Newport Jetty, Balboa Peninsula, Balboa Market, and a lot of familiar Newport Beach sights.

I found out a few things have changed since I took these photos. The famous old Balboa Market has been torn down and is now a parking lot. I was able to capture a few images while it was still standing including the Balboa Market Sign. And the Balboa Fun Zone bumper cars, carousel and some other attractions no longer exist and have been replaced by the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum.

New Chicago Prints and Stock Photos

I’ve created a new series of toned Chicago photos that are available for sale to buy as prints at my Photoshelter website and license as stock photos at Istockphoto. The toning includes variations in blue, cream, aqua, black and white, and HDR. I’ve been working at including more detail on my Chicago photos such as building names, building addresses, bridge names, and streets. This new series was mainly created from shoots I did in late 2011 and early 2012. Here are some examples:

Crown Point Indiana Photos

I uploaded about forty photos of Crown Point Indiana that are available for purchase as prints or stock photography. Pictures include the old Lake County Courthouse, Lake County Jail, Masonic Temple, Carnegie Center, Crown Theater, and Crown Point’s very own Madalyn the Hot Dog Lady.

Crown Point is located in Northwest Indiana with a population of over 37,000 and is considered part of the “Chicagoland” area. Crown Point has a traditional small town America feel with a main street consisting of the old Lake County Courthouse surrounded by numerous small businesses, known as “the square”, including a theater, ice cream shop, antique stores, and restaurants.

Crown Point is also known as the town where early 1900′s gangster John Dillinger escaped from the Lake County Jail. The jail Dillinger escaped from still exists and in 2008 Universal Studios filmed parts of the movie Public Enemies with Johnny Depp at the jail. The Lake County Sheriff’s house and jail are open to the public for tours and shows Dillinger’s cell and also where filming was done.

On somewhat of a sad note, Madalyn, the Hot Dog Lady, hasn’t returned to the Crown Point Square for 2011. She had a small portable hot dog stand there for over 20 years. In early 2010 she hadn’t shown up in the square and word had circulated that she planned to retire. But after someone started a Facebook campaign named “SAVE CROWN POINT’S 1st AND ONLY HOT DOG LADY!!” and thousands of people pleaded for her to return, she came back for the summer of 2010. I’m thankful she decided to give it a go for one more year. It’s wonderful things like Madalyn and her stand that take you away from the daily grind. These special and simple things seem to be disappearing quickly and are being replaced with the same businesses we see in every town in the United States. If every town has the same thing as every other town, then what makes that town special? I’m glad I was able to go with my young family and see Madalyn several times in the summer of 2010. My kids loved going there and I hope when they get older they’ll be able to remember her as part of their childhood. The hot dogs were excellent and unlike any I’ve had before. There was always a long line of people and Madalyn always had a smile and something nice to say. The summer of 2011 wasn’t the same without her. Thank you, Madalyn.

Crown Point Indiana photos can be found on my Photoshelter gallery. Here are some highlights:

New Chicago Editorial Stock Photos at Istockphoto

Istockphoto recently launched editorial images along with an article covering acceptable usage.

I finally got around to adding some Chicago editorial stock photos. This is a pretty nice addition because I have a lot of photos that just aren’t suitable as commercial stock photos but would be great as editorial.

When you do a search the results will show the editorial photos with red text as shown here. Oddly, the search doesn’t allow you to pick only editorial images but you can exclude them. They’re apparently not a collection like Vetta or Agency.

Here are a couple of my recently accepted editorial photos. The Chicago Theater sign is trademarked so it can’t be used for commercial purposes but would be great for editorial. Many of these images are also available on Photoshelter as prints.
